Kitchen Safety

Cooking is really fun, but make sure you never cook if your parents are not in the house. Before you start cooking, make sure that your parents know that you are going to do it. When you cook, make sure you are wearing a short-sleeved shirt or roll your sleeves up.

You should also have a lid ready to put over your pot in case what you are cooking catches on fire. Have you ever seen something catch on fire while your mom or your dad was cooking? I have, and I got a little bit scared; but luckily my parents knew what they were doing and how to take care of it. They had it out almost before it had started. Hopefully when you cook, you will be able to do the same thing. You should never set anything on the burner unless it is something you are cooking. If you do, it could become a habit and then you might accidentally set something on the burner while the burner is still hot.

PotDon't ever cook anything while you are outside or away from home. Something could catch on fire and if you were gone, you would not even know it until you came home. If you were outside, it might take a while for you to find out and by then the fire would be pretty big. I hope you have a lot of fun while you are cooking but be very careful!

Kitchen Safety Tips:

  • Never leave the area while cooking.
  • Keep everything clean. Grease burns easily.
  • Unplug toasters and other appliances when not in use.
  • Turn pot handles inward so that they won't be bumped or grabbed by children.
  • Keep the cooking area clear of hot pads, dish towles, and other combustibles.
  • If a fire starts, turn off the appliance and use a kitchen fire extinguisher (one that's intended for grease and electrical fires) to put it out.
