Quilt show returns
By Niis BueCASTLE ROCK -- Talking to Trudy Howarth is as easy as rolling up in a cozy quilt on a cold winter day.
Experience is one reason -- the Castle Rock woman guesses this is the 10th year she has coordinated the annual quilt show at the Castle Rock Exhibit Hall. It starts Wednesday and goes through the end of the month.
Howarth downplays her role, saying softly, "Everyone else does as much or more than I do."
She goes straight to a lace-bordered entry bearing a grand champion ribbon from the Cowlitz County Fair. Bertha Looney, whose work is highly respected, quilted and appliquéd it by hand. It's called "Thru Grandmother's Window." Close examination reveals three hummingbirds adroitly blended into the flower design.
To its left is a quilt in warm green and brown tones called "Trip Around the World," homemade by Betty Anderson in 1995.
Nearby, "An Amish Sampler" (1990) dazzles in red, white and blue, the first quilt made by Virginia Givens.
Former Castle Rock resident Carole Belangy Rutledge, now of Eugene, says in a note attached to her red-white-and-blue wall hanging, "An American Tear" -- "After terrorists struck the twin towers in New York, I made this quilt to commemorate the day America lost her innocence."
Another entry by Rutledge is a full-size quilt on a deep blue background called "The Calendar Kids."
Howarth pointed to a brilliant red-patterned quilt made by her daughter, Mary Howarth-Hernandez, who now lives in Alaska and started quilting two years ago. Hernandez sold the first quilt she made at a show in Valdez. The one on display is a gift to her brother and sister-in-law, who live in Kelso.
In addition to the quilts, there are several wall hangings and quilted "pictures" on display.

Admission: Free (donations accepted). Raffle tickets for a commercially-sewn quilt are $1 and are available at the Exhibit Hall and several Castle Rock stores.
